Botox - Non-Surgical Face Lift

Introduction

Botulinum toxin type A has been used for many years safely and effectively for a variety of medical conditions. It has recently become more popular for cosmetic use. It works by blocking the normal nerve impulses to the muscle, which then prevents contraction. Wrinkles can be static (fine lines caused by for example the sun) or dynamic (lines caused by repeated muscle contraction for example the frown line) in origin. Botox works very well for dynamic lines but is less successful for static lines. The areas most suitable for Botox treatment are the frown line, horizontal forehead lines and the laughter lines at the side of the eye (crow's feet). It can also be used for blepharospasm.

The treatment

This is done as an office procedure. During consultation the area targeted will be identified. A small amount of local anaesthetic cream applied to the skin in the area that will be injected can be helpful although most of the discomfort experienced is related to the fluid not the needle! It takes between 3 and 5 days to see the effect and continue to improve for around 14 days. The maximum effect lasts between three and five months.

Complications

After the treatment the skin is slightly red for a period of 15-30 minutes. You can develop a bruise due to bursting of the superficial blood vessels under the skin in the injected site. This may take up to a week to disappear and can easily be camouflaged with concealer. Drooping of the eyebrow can happen if the horizontal forehead lines are treated excessively. Repeat treatments will be necessary, as the effect is not permanent.

After the treatment

No specific after care needed. Arnica tablets may be helpful if you have developed a bruise. Skin care and cosmetics may be applied as normal.
