Curriculum Vitae

Mr. Grobbelaar graduated from the University of Pretoria Medical School in 1984.  His higher surgical training first in General Surgery and then in Plastic Surgery was carried out at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, where he obtained the South African Fellowship in Plastic Surgery from the South African College of Surgeons in 1993 as well as a higher research degree in Plastic Surgery from the University of Cape Town in 1993.

In 1994 he undertook an International Society of Aesthetic Surgery approved Fellowship with Mr. F. V. Nicolle in London. Further Plastic Surgery training was carried out at Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood, Middlesex and he was awarded the FRCS(ad eundum) by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1996 and the FRCS(Plast) in the same year. He is included in the specialist register established by the General Medical Council (GMC) and is a registered Consultant Plastic Surgeon with the South African Medical and Dental Council.

Mr Grobbelaar has been a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at the Mount Vernon Hospital Reconstructive, Plastic Surgery & Burns Unit from 1996 until October 2006 when the Mount Vernon Unit moved to its new home at the Royal Free Hospital Hampstead NHS Trust where he is now based as Programme Director & Clinical Lead.

Facial re-animation surgery as well as breast reconstruction constitutes his special interests in his NHS practice whilst in private practice he undertakes all aspects of cosmetic surgery in addition to reconstructive and microsurgery.  He has published more than 60 papers in the medical literature and has written several chapters in textbooks on plastic surgery as well as the cosmetic surgery section in the Microsoft Encarta encylopædia.

He is heavily involved in Plastic Surgery training and is a former Research Director at the RAFT Institute for Plastic Surgery, Burns and Skin Cancer Research which is located at Mount Vernon Hospital. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University College of London.

He has served as the UK representative on the Council of EURAPS and has been awarded a Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS(Eng)) for his research entitled 'A new surgical solution in surgical treatment of facial paralysis.'

Mr. Grobbelaar works with an excellent team including his practice manager and secretary, practice nurse, the consultant anaesthetist and the ward and theatre nurses at the various hospitals.
